In 2022, after learning more about my family’s history — and the history behind my name — I discovered that I’m actually Adam Jackson Vyse IV. My dad, Adam David Vyse III, and I are descendants of a Geordie — someone from Newcastle upon Tyne, England — a fisherman who, you guessed it, was also named Adam Vyse.
My dad, my Grumps (Geordie for Grandpa), and I are pictured out front of his family home in Newcastle. After that trip, I decided to honour my Grump's family, my dad, and our family's heritage by officially adopting Adam as my first name.

However, I tried rugby in high school, and played travel footy (soccer) growing up. I did have to give up other sports once Jr. hockey became a potential reality. I played parts of one Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season before starting my studies at MRU. Pictured is a photo of me in a High River town magazine after a photographer spotted my Dad and I skating for hours on the ever so Canadian town outdoor rink.

Later that summer, I signed up for my first triathlon — and I’ve done one every year since. Around the same time, I began working at Mountain Equipment Company, where I developed a love for backpacking.
I’ve made countless great hiking memories — from a solo four-day trip on the Juan de Fuca Trail, where I was woken up by a bear on my last night, to a 2025 hike to Berg Lake, at the base of Mount Robson, with my dad. But my all-time favourite memory goes back to 2006, on a family hike when my dad took us to see the “World’s Biggest Tree.” It wasn’t actually the world’s biggest, but that tree became a core memory for me.
